James William Gordon

October 2, 1929 - October 12, 2021

Our father was born on October 2, 1929, as he kicked off the Great Depression. He was married for 68 years to his bride: Ruth nee Callaway and after one year, are reunited. Predeceased by his parents George Gordon and Rachel Beveridge, his stepmother, Ella Gordon, his brother Jack, his sister, Margaret Heath, and son in law Brian McCracken. He is survived by Mark and his wife Kathy; Laura McCracken Ebbrell and her husband John, and Jamie and his wife Kim. Much loved Grampie of Jennifer, Adam, Emily, Alasdair and Andrew Gordon; James and John McCracken; and Alex and Connor Gordon. Great grandfather to 8. Also survived by his brother Al (Joanne) and sister in law Elaine Gordon.
Jim was born in East York. He enjoyed a very long and successful career in the Insurance business which began in Toronto and took him to Ottawa, London, and Toronto again before purchasing his own business in Cobourg. J.F. McCullough Insurance soon came to be known as James W. Gordon Insurance Brokers. It would later become a family affair, when Mark, Brian, Jamie, James and Alex would all play their part in its success.
Big Jim to many, he had a gregarious personality, loved to sing…if only the first line of any song, and was an avid lawn bowler and bridge player. Past President of the Cobourg Rotary Club, he was a member for over 50 years.
Mum and Dad loved to travel, spent decades of winters in New Smyrna Beach with wonderful friends and travelled all over the world. His was a long life well lived.
His first ever hospital stay was earlier this year and he was so very grateful for the wonderful care that he received at The Northumberland Hills Hospital. We would be grateful for donations to this facility in his memory. Thank you to Dr Emma Smith and your colleagues for your wonderfully compassionate care.
Jim Gordon was loved and he will be missed…but “we’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when, but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day”.
A private service will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, Monday October 18th at 11:00am. You may watch the service livestreamed by following the link on Jim’s page. Link will be available just prior to service time.

To the family members of Jim; I offer my sincere sympathy to each of you as you grieve the loss of a loved father, grandfather and great grandfather. Jim and Ruth were great community members who were highly regarded by their friends and acquaintances for their generous and varied contributions to Cobourg and area. I have many fond memories of working with Jim and Ruth on several political campaigns as we sought to ensure the election and re-election of a very popular and respected MP. There are many humorous stories of Jim as a shrewd and very careful money manager during each of the many campaigns in which we were involved. Once again I offer my sincere sympathy as you mourn his death over the next several weeks and months. Best, Bob

Ron Bailey - October 16, 2021

I met Jim in 1971 when he was arranging an "inspection" of downtown Cobourg. This was carried out by a number of insurance company representatives working with the Fire Department. Jim was also tasked with the after party. He did it well! I have known and respected him since and was very sorry at news of his passing. He was one of the good guys.

Evelyn Gorringe - October 16, 2021

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing as I have known him and Ruth for over 30 years as a member of the CLBC and the hospita l marathon bridge club and for many years helped to run his tournament participating in all the goodies he supplied. He will be missed by all who knew him. Eve

It was 1977 and I just a junior bowler, but I had the fortune to be under the blanket of so many great senior bowlers that kept an eye on my growing experience. In 1980, I had the pleasure to attend the summer junior games in Peterborough and my ride up was in the back seat in Jim's old vintage Cadillac, I placed 2nd with a Silver Medal which I still have in my special collections today. And, in my glass ware is the Gordon Tournament tall glass you get to keep if one does good enough at a bowling tourney. I attended a few downtown meetings at the Dutch Oven with the gang, including Jim and what a butch of fun and hard-hearing dudes you just can't get enough of, including the history of our great town stories way before my time. My condolences to family, friends and all those who knew such a great person, Keith

Dearest Laura and extended family and friends, Your Dad brought much joy to so many throughout his 90 plus years! Marilyn and I were recalling how happy the residents on the 3rd floor of the old Cobourg hospital were to see him arrive with his singing buddys. Our Dad was one of many who enjoyed accompanying as they sang the oldies (often a cappella). His fun loving presence will indeed be missed. What a beautiful thought to imagine him together with Mom after a year apart. May they Rest in Peace. Shirley & Gary Christo

Jim was a much loved patron at the Concert Hall. Many a night I remember looking down from the stage and seeing Jim and Ruth in their front row seats. He would often come into the box office on the Monday following the show with his version of the show and a list of songs we should have done!! Every visit ended with a duet. It’s trite to say “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.” But in Jim’s case, it’s the truth. A true gentleman, an honourable life we’ll lived. My sincere condolences to Jim’s family on their loss.

Tom & Judy Mclean - October 13, 2021

Laura, Mark and Jamie, Your Dad had such a big, generous, kind personality. I’ll never forget meeting him and Ruth when Laura first hosted me on a weekend visit from Queen’s. They made me feel welcomed and important- so lovely for a university student getting used to life away from home. And in the years since, I have been so impressed by the fantastic legacy he and Ruth created which has led to a wonderful family tradition of making so many positive contributions to the fabric of Cobourg’s community. Hugs to the entire family. Deb and Glenn Xo

Dear Mark , Laura and Jamie and families So sorry to hear of your loss of your dad. It was a privilege to know Jim. He was a “ larger than life “character. Full of good humour, interesting conversation and filled with integrity. Our community is much richer for him living here and being an integral part of Cobourg .

Bill & Jane MacDonald - October 13, 2021

Jim was a true gentleman. He was a delight to know and be around. He had a great sense of humour and a gift for song, albeit perhaps not the voice? His contributions to Rotary and his many other activities have left our community and indeed, the world, a much better place for his being in it. He has left a great legacy of good works and generosity. He was very proud of his children and family as a whole. By involving many of them in his insurance business, he has left them a personal legacy that will stand them in good stead for many years to come. He will be missed by all who knew him

A huge loss of a wonderful man. He will be truly missed.

Tom & Elinor Copeland - October 13, 2021

While out for a walk, we would periodically see Jim and Ruth out for their walk, always holding hands. Jim would shout across the street, "hold hands you two," with that trademark grin adding an exclamation mark. I always enjoyed the way he would lighten the mood at Rotary meetings. He always knew how to get a laugh. #LargerThanLife

To Laura, Mark, Jamie and everyone in the extended Gordon family - It has made for a sad day to learn of Jim's death as I remember how his grin and love of music would brighten any day our paths would cross. He was simply one of those "larger than life" personalities, making him someone with whom you enjoyed sharing his company. He was always helpful to me in any business dealings we had, and was obviously a man of great integrity. We shared a love of music, and would inevitably break into the lyrics of some long-forgotten song even when we would meet on King Street. He was very encouraging and supportive of the musical side of my career, for which I am forever grateful. I trust a lifetime of happy memories will comfort you through these difficult days. As the great Irving Berlin wrote - "the song is ended, but the melody lingers on".

Patricia and Mark Perkin - October 13, 2021

We are so sorry for the loss of one of Cobourg's Fathers! He will live vicariously in our hearts through one-line songs that he sang to us when we would meet! May he live eternally through our fond memories. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all!
