Dear Ball Family. I am sorry for my late response. Your father was such an amazing man, one of Cobourg's Greatest! He always had a smile and a story to pass on. He enjoyed telling me that he played 5 different sports with my dad, Paul Currelly and would always warm my heart with his tales. He will be so missed in this community. Please know, that I am thinking of you at this difficult time.

We met "Ballsy" a few years ago on his daily route along the Cobourg waterfront. He would show us his fishing pictures and pictures of his grandkids in a small album he carried with him on his scooter. He would always have a tale to to tell about his many trips to the fishing camp. He spoke highly of his family and we admired his dedication to his wife in her final years in the nursing home. He was a fixture along the waterfront, and he will be missed.

Cousins, I am so sorry to hear about Uncle Donnie's passing. He was a very special man. The first fishing rod I ever bought was at his store. I remember how generous he always was and how he always made us laugh. One of the best memories was the time he offered $20 to Jeff if he could crack 2 eggs over his head. He pulled out of the deal after the first egg because it wasn't as fun as he thought it would be! Our kids loved sitting and listening to him recite the Cremation of Sam McGee and watching him pull his thumb off! I know you will miss him. Our love and prayers go out to you all. Dear Fred, Barb, Debbie, and Don, Really, there are no words. What can you say about a man who lived life to the fullest and beamed whenever he spoke to you? Don was a sincere and genuine gentleman. Everyone he encountered has a positive Don Ball Sr. story. He was an iconic, legendary figure who loved telling stories, sharing jokes, playing sports, and going fishing. We could all take a page out of Don's book and make time for people. After being a highly respected role model in Baltimore, he moved to Cobourg. His world opened up when he purchased a scooter. This allowed him to enjoy the boardwalk and share some joy and happiness with everyone he encountered ~ whether it be a friend or a stranger. We have lost a pillar of our community, but he has left us with an everlasting gift ... many wonderful memories, which we will cherish forever. We're all going to miss him dearly! To the Ball Family, when my father and I moved to Baltimore in 1959 and I had to privilege to meet Don as part of the Baltimore Merchants ball team in the early 60’s I soon realized what a great person he was. So very sad to hear of Don’s passing. He was a wonderful person. I remember, as a child, being taken to his store on Division Street, by my father, and him joking with me. Later in life, he provided me with a photo of my grandfather’s ball team from the 1920s. He had a wonderful spirit. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

It is with the heavies of hearts we offer our condolences to the Don, Fred, Barb & Debbie and the Ball Family. I have far to many memories I could share, but my most cherished where as a young boy dragging my dad into the store for a pop and listen to the latest joke. Then as a teenager being a teammate in Baltimore I could not have asked for a better mentor. Finally after having been away from Cobourg for more than twenty years the first person I ran into on my return was Don, he looked at me a little funny and I started to introduce myself and of course he quickly finished my sentence with a chuckle, proceed with a joke and a catch-up tour through the photo album. I feel so privileged to have known Don and witnessed his greatness!

I/we were so sorry to hear of Don's passing. Our family knew Don/Jean and all their kids for many many years. My mom and Jean were good friends and so when each one was married, their families became friends. Who could forget the Saturday nights at the Ball's house. In summer- hide and seek in the dark? In the winter, who will forget the ice in that tunnel, where dad cleared a track with the snow blower and the tractor -made for fast down hill and slippery going uphill. Don loved to entertain kids, visiting Baltimore Church the highlight for our kids was the man who would pull his thumb off. Pre Covid our families were at the beach and there was Don on his scooter ready to now dazzle our grandchildren. Sincere condolences to the Ball family on Don's passing. Don was one in a million and will be missed but always remembered by those who knew him.

As a neighbour I have known Don all my life. When I needed a new ball glove, skates or a fishing pole that was “guaranteed” to catch the biggest fish Don provided the best he had with a big smile. I shot my first deer with a Winchester 30-30 that I bought from Don some 40 years ago. That rifle is still in the family. He etched a fond memory in the minds of all the Mann’s with his jokes and Witt. Our grand-daughters still smile when they remember Don calling them the little boys next door. To Fred, Barb, Debbie and Donnie your dad was special and will most certainly be missed by all who knew him. We were certainly blessed to have had him in our lives. ❤️

I remember like it was yesterday, him coming into the radio station each month to clean our rugs. He always had a great story to tell and was always upbeat. Many times over the years, he talked of his time that he enjoyed going hunting with his sons (you Fred & Don) and friends each fall. He reminded us of a late uncle that Diana had in Winnipeg. He looked like him, was the same size and height and friendly manner. He lived a good life and now can enjoy his time with his dear wife in the afterlife! Fred, my sincere condolences to you and your family at the loss of your father. My only, but delightful, encounter with him was when I was volunteering at the CCC COVID Vaccination clinic and you brought your Dad in for his first vaccine. He was quite happy as I recall, and it was good to see you again too. May he soar high and free wherever he is.

When I was a boy of about 16, I used to haunt Don’s Sport Shop; he was always so kind and accommodating to curious children and I bought and traded a number of firearms with him. I think he still had a little takedown Winchester .22 pump rifle when he passed or hopefully passed it on to one of children or grandchildren. Over the years I would occasionally bump into Don, when visiting Cobourg and he always remembered me and was up for a little trip down memory lane. The true measure of a life well lived is in the remembrance people have.

It was always a pleasure to meet and talk with Don. He was a good old fashion kind person and loving husband, father and grandfather who knew Cobourg and loved to talk the town news and sports. We enjoyed many a sorority social with Don and Jean, including square dancing at Fenella Hall. A man of faith in Christ, he is with his Lord as promised in 2 Corinthians 5:8 and reunited with Jean.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. RIP Don.

Rest in peace, cousin Don. I will miss our lunch meetings at Rhinos where we probably expressed our opinions on every one who ever played ball in Hamilton Township. Fortunately, these conversations were not recorded. You were a great sportsman, story teller, and a gentleman and you will be missed.

I have many fond memories of Choir practice on Thursday nights at the Baltimore Church When He would team up with Ross Symons to keep the ladies in the front row on their toes. one of their favourite things was tying the ladies' coat sleeves to their chairs. Don was the best hockey player I ever played against He with Baltimore me with Colborne many memories Don had a brother that played defence and he was big and hard to get around so I feel a lose of a friend and pray for his family at this time of real lose. GOD BLESS you ALL. { Blake].

Such a kind and thoughtful man, full of humour and love. He was a wonderful friend, an exemplary role model, a Cobourg legend. Rest in peace, Don.

We have known Don and Jean and all their family and cherished all of those interactions all of our lives. I gasped when I saw this notice. I am very sorry to learn of Don's passing. I always thought of him as a gentleman and my last conversation with him at my dad's funeral a few years ago reminded me of his warm and kind qualities. Many years ago, I loved to visit his sports shop on Division street in Cobourg. My most vivid memories of Don are from the ball park in Baltimore and other diamonds. For many years he was the best pitcher there was in our neck of the woods. I wish to offer my sincerest condolences to all of the members of his large family.

My thoughts are with the family at this time. Don was my first cousin but older by 21 years. As a youngster, I used to go to the Cobourg baseball diamond to watch Don play and was always proud to point out that he was my cousin. The last time I saw Don was in 2004 at a "Richards cousins" dinner in Baltimore and he was smiling then, as he always had. Cherish his memory.
