Jean Nora Farrell was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Jean passed away on April 17, 2021 at the age of 82 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honour her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
She was born to Bernard and Annie (nee Hasson) Mellon on February 14th, 1939 in Montreal. Raised and educated in Montreal, Jean met her husband, John Hugh Farrell while working at Bell Canada in Engineering. Together, they had three children: John, Erin (Tim Boland), and Kerry (David Dominique) and five Grandchildren: Tayler, Rachel and Megan (mother Jennifer Farrell) and Parker and Andrew Boland.
Jean loved spending time golfing, playing bridge and entertaining. Her smile and personality would light up a room, and her laughter was infectious. Through their lives, John and Jean traveled the world greatly enriching the lives of their friends and family with the stories of their adventures. She was a skilled needle pointer and painter and spent years volunteering including with the Cobourg Rotary Club raising funds for local community needs. In addition to the Rotary Club, Jean met many friends over the years at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, the Dalewood Golf Club, the Cobourg Yacht Club, St. Michael’s Church, and the Rideau Club.
Jean was predeceased by her sisters Margaret May and Anne and her brothers Bernard (Benny) and Gerald. She is survived by her sister Maureen and many nieces and nephews.
The family gratefully acknowledge the exceptional care Jean received at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg.
In light of Covid-19, a private funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation in her memory would be appreciated.

To all the family. My very deepest condolences on the loss of your beautiful wife and mother. I just today heard the sad news of Jean passing and it has touched me deeply. My family, particularly my late mom and dad, so cherished their friendship with your whole family. Soo many great times and wonderful memories were created over the many many years of friendship. Weddings, baptisms, pool parties and get togethers were enjoyed over the years. I remember Mrs. Farrell so very well for her beautiful smile and laughter. She was such a pretty lady inside and out. I will tell Hugh and my siblings the sad news later today. Hugh will be very sad and has said so many times in the last few years just how kind Jean always was to him. She had a special way of talking to him as a child that always made him feel very special. I will always be grateful for how kind she has always been to him, especially in the last few years since our parents passed. Blessings and love to all the family. Our fondest memories of growing up have included your beautiful family along with the rest of the St. FX gang of guys who stayed throughout all those years. ❤️

Kerry and family - I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how much more difficult this has been because of the pandemic, but thank you for sharing the service. It was nice to feel part of your mom's celebration in a small way and laugh and cry along with your whole family. The thoughts and stories everyone shared were touching and funny and inspiring all at the same time and a wonderful tribute to the kind of person your mom was. I am so sorry for your loss. Being Kerry’s friend, growing up over the years, I remember Mrs. Farrell’s laugh. I can still hear her giggle that was often quickly followed by an “oh Kerry!” I will remember Mrs. Farrell for her kindness and generosity, always welcoming me into your home. John Hugh..very sad news...a great loss for you and all the family! Jean was such a perfect match...and you both accomplished so much in every aspect of your lives. I certainly remember the warm hospitality of your home in Ottawa and the delight way, way back in Halifax when Anne and I heard about the wonderful Jean! and the St. Patrick's Day parade in Montreal!
