I died on March 11 , three days before my 80th birthday. (I hope I went peacefully). I am survived by my wife Lina (nee Gilis) who enriched my life beyond measure, our daughter Marni of whom I have always been immensely proud, Marni’s partner, Phillip Connolly, who I respect deeply (I guess I should have told him this before I died), grandchildren Daniella and Deven, great kids who I should have gotten to know better (My fault, sorry) , my sister Julie (Regrettably, circumstance prevented us from being closer). I was extremely fortunate to have known Brian Creighton and David Wetmore who have been my closest friends. Thank you both very much. A very special thank you to Dr. Nigel Jagan, my friendly family physician, for his care and patience over these many years. I was employed by the City of Oshawa (in the Public Works Department) for 29 years. I choose to believe that for various periods of time I was a passable photographer, bridge player, curler, furniture maker and handy- man (except for plumbing). I also choose to believe that I was a bit of a principled eccentric. It was a real privilege getting to know (and, in many cases I hope, befriend) the people I did. My biggest regrets are that I never grew up, and that I grew up. There will be no funeral. Instead, a party will be held as soon as arrangements can be made. Please wear jeans. Be-be-be-be-be-be that’s all ,folks.
Addendum by Lina. David died peacefully. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ruth and John Noel and their children Elliott Noel, Kayu Chin, their children and Miriam Noel (Philipp Löser). Thank you to Dr. Lee and nurses Jessica, Chelsea, and Ashely for keeping David comfortable and pain free while he was on 4F, and to all the specialists who consulted and helped him through the years. I worked with David for 10 years in the 90s. Such a fun guy and an interesting person. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but I am glad he left as he lived this life...full of good humour.

We remember David as a friend who offered his time and talents with enthusiasm and generosity. There was always a story and laughs to share. He spent weeks living with us, while building our deck, and over the years often met us for dinner. Dear Lina, It has been a dozen years almost since Joan and I last saw you and David, but despite the length of time, we remember David fondly. I remember the day I started at the City 31 years ago and met Dave. I was fresh out of college and he made me feel so welcome. As the years went on he was always a breath of fresh air with his stories, laughter and direction. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Heartfelt sympathy to the Zatzman family, especially to Lina and Marni. I worked with David for approximately 10 years at the City of Oshawa. I have a story which goes to the kindness of the Zatzman family. Many years ago, David and I were walking home from work (we lived in fairly close proximity). My mother, who had recently moved from Halifax noticed David and I walking. Later Mom inquired as to his name. I responded "David"......my mother responded "Zatzman". That surprised me, so I asked her how she could know that. Her response surprised me more. Years earlier my Mother had worked for David's Dad in Halifax. This dear man gave my single Mom of four, a job which she needed desperately. My mother further indicated that he was very kind to her and helped our family out when others turned a blind eye. You see, the apple really does not fall from the tree! RIP David.

So sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. He truly was unique, always smiling with a story to share. I have fond memories of sharing coffee breaks at city hall with Dave. He will surely be missed. My condolences to Lina and family.

Having worked with Dave at the City of Oshawa for so many years, and competed with him on the curing rink, you couldn't have asked for a more caring and understanding person. His infectious smile and caring attitude will be missed.

He was more than just a dedicated colleague...he was a person who cared about the people he worked with. Once he learned that my husband had a chronic condition, David always asked me how Jim was doing. And I knew David was sincere. Sending out a notice to retirees that David had passed, many of them contacted me. Their impression was the same. They had good memories of having known and worked, and laughed, with David...and played as well - curling and bridge. A keen mind. A special person. Always to be remembered.

I loved you auto-obituary David. Even in death you make me smile. I remember curling with you, pointing to a rock and saying that we needed a little kiss here to roll for shot. I received the shock of my life when you bestowed a kiss upon my cheek. I can’t remember if we made the shot or won the game but I do remember that kiss. Another time you phoned me and got a stranger (my wife) on the line. You asked for me and she said “I’m sorry, he’s out of town for a few days.” You automatically responded “I’ll be right over.” Looking forward to seeing you in the far far future David. Take care.

Lina, thank you for sharing Dave with all of us at the Oshawa Curling Club for so many years. He was a mentor and friend that will stick with me forever. He stayed so humble throughout all he gave & experienced and taught me to find humour in ANYTHING. He supported my schooling, my curling, and growth as a person. He continuously went out of his way to find out how I was doing and ALWAYS let me know he was proud of me. What a wonderful person.

I shed tears for the passing of David before he even got to 80, but I thank God that I had the opportunity of getting to know him, to enjoy his company, his foolishness, and his excellent cooking too. I will join the many who will miss him, and I'll think of him every time I burst out laughing at something silly. He did love to make us all laugh.
