Patricia Ellen McHenry

January 22, 1943 - February 21, 2021

It is with heavy hearts the family of Patricia Ellen McHenry announces her peaceful passing on Sunday February 21st, 2021 at the Brantford General Hospital, in her 79th year. Cherished and loved by her daughters Tammy O'Neill Foisey and husband Ken and Kelly Dafoe and husband Dave. Patricia was born in Trenton, Ontario to James and Emma LaMorre McHenry the youngest of six siblings. Although times were hard, their faith and family gave them community , support and laughter. She married Carl and they raised their girls in Oakville, Ontario. She was appointed Justice Of The Peace For Our Province Of Ontario in 1993 and served with passion until her 75th birthday. Patricia was grateful every day for her colleagues in the courts and the Police Officers she respected so much. Patricia loved to dance and she cried at the Humane Society commercials. She was proud and strong with a devilish wit. She loved an event and the chance to "get gussied up". Her friendships both new and lifelong were treasures and she missed the spontaneity of dinner out or a casino trip in these Covid times . Patricia is pre-deceased by her parents, brothers John and Donald, sister Janet and brother-in-law Warren Stewart. She leaves behind her beloved sisters Margaret Stewart and Anne McHenry, her grand family Josh, Emily, Matt, Tristan and many nieces and nephews and their children. Friends and family are invited attend visiting on Thursday evening. February 25th from 7 - 7:45 pm. and 8 - 9 pm. (You must RSVP on our web site www.MacCoubey.com for your visitation time slots.) A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Cobourg on Friday February 26th at 10 am. (You must RSVP at www.MacCoubrey.com if you are attending the mass). The mass will be streamed live at www.stmichaelschurchcobourg.com. Cremation with interment in the spring. If desired donations may be made to the Northumberland Humane Society.

It was with sadness that I learned of Pat’s passing. We walked to and from school almost everyday for ten years and were the best of friends. I’d pick her up on the way and always had to wait until she ate her cold toast with peanut butter or Emma made her pony tail into a big ringlet. She had style. I can see her dancing with Carly wearing a wrist corsage and he in a white sports coat and pink carnation. I have lots of good memories of our youth and regret that our paths didn’t cross in later life. My sympathy and prayers go out to her children and family. Ann Marie Head (Price)

Rona Donefer - March 6, 2021

Patricia was our neighbour in Cobourg and was so nice to our family. We liked to chat on the lawn and talk about our kids and dogs. She even looked after our little dog who got so excited whenever he saw her. When our son was 13 she brought him in to see her in court and gave him a tour. We loved her special sparkle and joy of life and will cherish fond memories. Our deepest condolences to Tammy and Kelly from Rona, Rene, Emiliana, Milton and Marcela.

When I was an MTO officer in Northumberland, I many occasions to meet with Her Worship on a professional basis. Unlike many of her colleagues, she took the time to get to know the officers who served our community. It was indeed a privilege to know her and I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a special lady.

Garry Hull - February 27, 2021

I was truly saddened to hear of her Worship’s passing. I had many occasions to be in front of Patricia over the course of my career. Whether at the court office or in the kitchen at her home drinking coffee and sampling her cookies, she always had a smile on her face and was quick to share a funny anecdote. Over the course of my career there were many great JP’s, but there was only one Patricia! May you forever be at peace and rest easy Patricia. You will be missed.

Marc Bebee - February 25, 2021

Patricia McHenry was the first Justice of the Peace I appeared in front of almost 20 years ago. Over those years I appeared in front of her hundreds of times. Each and every time I walked into her Court seeing her on the Bench would immediately lift my mood because I knew that regardless of what the docket had in store she would meet it with fairness, kindness, and grace. She genuinely cared about the people who appeared in front of her and often would give them not just what her position and role required but words of encouragement, and more often than not, a second chance. Hers might have been the first face of Justice an accused had seen, but even if not the first, Justice has had no face more compassionate than hers. Compassion is a trait both precious and rare, particualrly to those for whom life and authority has shown too little, too often, prior. Before and after Court we would chat about the goings on and she'd ask about the kids as they grew. Sometimes the chats would go on for quite some time though now, in hindsight, they feel so brief. I remember our last chat and it ended in a hug and goodbye and it is heart breaking for me to now realize it was our last. My most sincerest condolences to her loved ones.

My deepest sympathies and prayers to Her Worship’s family. I had the great pleasure appearing in her Court first as defence counsel and later as a Crown. She was kind, wise and prudent in her decisions and in protecting our community. As has been mentioned before there would always be a smile, a question about how I was doing, how the kids were and her Worship gushing about her family and her latest adventure (or misadventure) after Court ended for the day. I feel lucky to have known such a wonderful lady. God Bless

Tammy and Kelly I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of your wonderful mother. I worked with her at the court office in Cobourg for at least 15 years. She was the most fun loving person ever. She enjoyed coming into the office, showing off her new swanky clothes. She was always the best dressed lady in the office. I remember she always came to my house for little house parties that I had, and just enjoyed getting together with everyone for a good time. She will be so missed by so many people. May you all find peace soon.

To the family of Patricia McHenry: I was saddened to learn of the passing of Her Worship JP McHenry. I lived and practised law in Cobourg from 1977 to 2012, and as a result had the pleasure and privilege of coming to know her and to appear before her in the court. I enjoyed knowing her and appearing before her, where I always felt she made her decisions based not only on the established law, but also brought her own attitude of personal fairness, compassion and common sense to her duties, yet without much willingness to suffer fools, - factors that are not always present in our courts, no matter how much we may wish it to be. In more private sessions she was always warm, friendly and welcoming which made the opportunities to be with her good experiences. I trust you all will have a lifetime of warm memories of her which will be of great comfort to you in your loss. Brad Halls Fergus, Ontario (formerly of Cobourg) brad.halls@wightman.ca

Mark Moorcroft - February 23, 2021

I knew Justice of the Peace McHenry well in my prior roles as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Cobourg and then as the Crown Attorney for Northumberland County. She was a truly wonderful person. In life you meet lots of people who ask you how things are and how your family is when they meet you, but I always felt like Patricia really meant those things when she spoke to me. She was a fantastic Justice of the Peace. Lenient and kind most of the time, but with a good sense of community values, and she could be tough when she needed to be. When bail court would end and the record would stop recording, Patricia would often engage in conversation with myself and the other court players. She also continued to visit us at the courthouse even after her retirement. I know from our many conversations how much she loved her daughters, and the time that she got to spend with her sisters. She would tell me with glee about day trips with her sisters. She had such a zest for life. My sympathies to the family. I know how good a person that you have lost. God Bless. Justice Mark Moorcroft

A bright warm light has gone out of this world with Patricia's passing. Sincere condolences to Tammy, Kelly and their families. Patricia was always so positive and fun loving. Remember all the good times with her and how much she loved you. One of my best memories was her surprise birthday party when she thought just she Jim and I were going to Swiss Chalet like normal to celebrate our birthdays. Instead approx 40 people surprised her in my basement and all she could say was "but I brought coupons" when I told her dinner was at my house! I miss her but know she is in a better place now.

I had the honor of working with Patricia for a number of years. She was always happy, always joking around and so full of life. She was so proud of her daughters, she spoke of them often. I remember the many times we would be laughing in her chambers about her being so tired from staying at the slots in Peterborough a wee bit too long the night before. Patricia's kitchen table was always open for a sit down coffee and a chat about anything. She was a wonderful and lovely person. I will miss her!
