Albert Virgil Maynard

March 23, 1943 - January 28, 2021

Father, poppa, friend, son, brother
Predeceased by his wife Marie and mother Maizie
Survived by his son Brett (Wendi), daughter Jacquie (Duane), grandchildren Keifer, Payton , Garrett and Kennedy. Brother of the late Robert. Brother-in-law of Janis Griffith, brother to John Maynard and son of John Maynard Sr.
Born in Newfoundland, Bert’s family moved to Toronto before settling in Cobourg at the age of 13. Years later when his family moved back to Toronto, he remained in Cobourg with some of his friends that he still has to this day, including the love of his life Marie. Bert lived for family, friends, cards, music, scotch and sports pools, but not necessarily always in that order.
He was an absolute staple in the community. Even though Bert wasn’t always great at the sports he participated in, his passion shone through as either the player, mentor, or coach. Volunteer work for many years with the Cobourg Police, Men’s Night at Ashbrook and several charities, Bert always strived to stay busy.
Wherever Bert went, whoever he interacted with, or whatever he did - his presence was never to be forgotten, and always to be cherished. He was always free to do what he wanted, when he wanted - with the day he passed being no exception. His sarcasm and sense of humour will either be remembered or finally forgotten.
In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you hug someone close to you, do something kind for someone nearby or donate your time.

I have fond memories of Bert. He always welcomed us into his home, and graciously put up with a bunch of rowdy teenagers. I admire the patience he was able to display, I wish I had some of it these days! He always made time to help with coaching, and spectating games. And then he would sit down and have a beer with you after and share a funny story. My condolences to the entire family.

Mike Bevan - January 30, 2021

All the great memories and messages here certainly show what a great friend and family man Bert was. I always enjoyed being in sports pools with him (particularly football and the coffee that was ready at the house before our season opening drafts on Sunday mornings). One of my first memories of being at his house was watching a Sunday night football game that some of my players were in. At that time, the game was on a specialty channel that not everyone got, and Bert welcomed a couple of us over to watch the game with him. I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with him over the five years during the Sports Addict. One particular memory, was going to the Industrial Park in Cobourg and Bert showing me on a Saturday how to drive his pick-up truck (stick shift), before I headed to Syracuse the next day (in his truck), to pick up some items for the store. Made it back in one piece with the truck, so he must have done a great teaching job in one day. I also remember before I knew him well, umpiring some lob ball games that he was coaching in. I was young and probably wasn't the best umpire, and I remember a couple coaches getting heated at times, but not Bert. Y Coach Bert? I hadn't been able to see him as much the last few years, other than mainly on the first day of the football season and I looked forward to those days and the back and forth banner we all had poking fun at each other. Sincere condolences to Brett, Jacquie, Kiefer and families, and those like me who will miss our great friend. Mike

My deepest condolences go out to Jacquie and Brett and family. As you both know your dad meant the world to us . We had become really good friends years ago when I invited him to play poker at our weekly game ,Little did we know what a card he really was. With every Jab he threw at you , you came to realize that he only did this to friends he really liked. As the years flew by we started travelling around to different golf courses every week with our regular foursome. Eventually we tried those stay and play at Bellmere Winds golf coarse,Many laughs had by all. We also started playing euchre on a weekly basis. Larry Kris and I really looked forward to playing cards with your dad, Ill leave you with one of Berts classic lines, I don't like you. never did, and never will. If you heard this from him., you have got the stamp of approval

Terry Demill - January 29, 2021

I am very sorry to hear about Bert's passing. He was a volunteer with the Cobourg Police for many of the years that I was an officer there. A great volunteer and gentleman.

Bill & Kathy Bleekman - January 29, 2021

Bert would drive past our house every morning on his way to the Y, and at exactly 8:05 every morning rev his Harley full throttle, and repeat on his way home. He would drop in on a winter afternoon, and have a dram or two of my scotch, and ask me why I don't buy better stuff. My little dog Buddi would climb on Bert's lap and stay there throughout the visit. Buddi doesn't much like anyone. He loved Bert. Dogs, they say, are great judges of character! Bert would stand over a six foot putt on the 18th green with a cold beer on the line, and with the most unorthodox putting style imaginable make the putt every time, every time. Brett, Jacquie your dad was stubborn, bull headed and one of the genuinely best friends I've ever or will ever have. Keiffer and all the grandkids. You were the light of his life, and he was so,so proud of each and everyone of you. 'Till we meet again my friend. Love you man !

Our condolences and love to Jacquie, Brett and family. Over 50 years of friendship with Bert, so many great memories flash through my mind. Canoeing with our kids across a lake during a storm. Recently saw a picture of the year Bert & I coached our daughters in “Y” ball, back in the 1970’s. Years of football trips, pools, baseball, hockey, golf, squash...fortunate and honoured to have Bert as a great friend. Bert was good man, generous, caring and loving. The kids and grandkids meant everything to him. Love you Bert.
