Peacefully, with his family at his side, at Ed’s House Hospice in Cobourg on Monday November 30, 2020, Stewart Sprague at 77 years of age. Beloved husband of Donna Sprague (nee Chisholm). Loving father of Kirk Sprague (Debora), and Erica Naccarato (Mike). Cherished grandfather of David (Andrea), Zachary (Lucas), Julianna (Sean), and Eric. Great grandfather of Aaralynn. Dear brother of Dr. William (Bill) Sprague (Geraldine). Loved brother in law of Marilyn (Sterling) Anthony, Jacqueline (Faron) Whynott, and Sandra Chisholm. Predeceased by sister in law Cheryl Beck. Also missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Stewart lived a full life with Donna, and no matter where life took him, all felt his “Joie de vivre”. Many will miss his sense of humour and laughter. He spent his career teaching at C.D.C.I. West where he enjoyed many friendships and shared his love of the arts. Stewart was active in the art community of Northumberland County, belonging to many local clubs and sharing his passion for arts with others. Stewart spent his summers connecting with his East Coast family and friends on Forbes Beach, Nova Scotia. Family, travel, teaching, music and arts were a few Stewart’s passions.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers that supported Stewart through his illness. The home care team from St Elizabeth Nursing, especially Holly, Drs. Mulé and Essak. The care team at Ed’s House especially his primary health team, Joan and Robyn. The family would like to thank the many friends and family members that attended Ed’s Place on November 30, 2020. This support and participation in the Honour Guard to provide Stewart with a send off, fitting of a man loved by so many. The family was pleased but not surprised to see so many turn up to pay tribute to Stewart. There will be a scattering of ashes on Saturday October 23rd, at 2pm at the Heritage Cemetery of St. Peter. A reception will follow at the family home. Please dress for the weather. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in memory of Stewart to be provided to Ed’s House – Northumberland Hospice or The Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre, Cobourg, Ontario.
My sincere condolences to Donna and family. I have fond memories of Stew at the West,

Dear Donna and family, I am so sorry to hear that my cousin Stew was deceased. As young boys growing up in Belleville we had experienced various activities together and those memories now are very special. Over the years we met only occasionally but each time our friendship and family ties were immediate renewed. I will cherish his memory.
I was so sad to hear of Stew's passing. He was one of the first artists I met when I moved to Northumberland County 14 years ago. We painted together at Joanne Purdy's in Grafton, the Pine Ridge Art Group and the Cobourg Art Club where we hung many annual shows together. You would rarely see Stew without a sketchbook in his hand. He loved to share his Nova Scotia watercolours with me when we would reconvene at the club each fall. We also shared many travel tales as we both loved to roam the world often for weeks at a time. It is wonderful that he and Donna were able to explore so many far flung destinations together in the last few years. He always had a smile on his face and was willing to pitch in to help especially if it involved the promotion of the arts in the community. I will miss him.
Not only was he a teacher of mine, but he also became a friend as I joined the Art Club here in Cobourg. He taught me how to enjoy Art and he had this very great laugh. He would not hesitate to correct me when I went a little over the line with my humor, which I learned to appreciate. Great man, and he will be missed.
Our condolences at this most difficult time . Please take care Donna . Todd Smith .
So sorry to hear of Stu’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences

Dear Donna and family, Ray and I were so very sorry to learn of Stew being ill and then of the sudden loss of him. He was such a lovely guy . We have many happy memories our times together. I recall the time that Donna (my favourite cousin) and Stew first met while we were in nurses training at the V G in Halifax . Then being the maid of honour at their wedding and thinking back to what a wonderful life they built together . Anyone who knew Stew could see that Donna was the love of his life. Stew will be so missed . Cherish the memories of him. RIP dear man .
When I joined the Cobourg Art Club, Stew was one of the very first to welcome me. He was an incredibly generous contributor to the conviviality of the CAC, always willing to share his knowledge and so much fun. He is such a loss. My deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends.
Our deepest condolences to family. What a wonderful person to have had the pleasure of knowing, we certainly enjoyed spending time over a good meal, wine and conversation...something we will surely miss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers
Dear Donna, Kirk and Erica; We were so sad to learn of your loss of precious Stew. Our hearts are heavy for you and your families. We mourn with you and will so remember his wonderful, smiling face. We wish you love and strength at this time and Art will treasure memories of their times at the WEST. Art and Nancy
"Mr." Spragge was one of my favorite teachers. I have fond memories of him doing his dance steps while he waited for the tape recorder to rewind. A kind and encouraging teacher. My condolences to his family.
My condolences to the Sprague family on your loss, but I must say I smiled when I saw Mr. Sprague's photo. I was a C.D.C.I. West student from 1973 to 1977. For some reason our class - and I think it was just our class - collectively marked one another's art projects. He was probably teaching a lesson on 'art appreciation', but it was a process that continued through Gr. 13. I remember him nearly collapsing in laughter at some of the critiques, but he rolled with it. How many teachers would put up with, nay encourage that style of learning? Only the great ones. Godspeed Mr. Sprague!
May I echo the sentiments already expressed, and add, that apart from art groups, Stew will also be missed at the Encore Club and Friday night dances. Ever the teacher, he supported all artistic efforts with positive comments and helpful suggestions. I often sought out Stew's opinion, for his great eye with composition and perspective. Donna, my thoughts are with you and your family. RIP Stew. Lynda Hart
Donna and Family, I was sorry to read of your loss. My, how time passes quickly and the later stage of life comes all-too soon. May the loving memories help you through the emptiness of the many tomorrows ahead.
I remember when the Sprague family and the Varga family went to Hawaii together while I was in high school, one of the best trips I have ever been on. Magnum PI was filming across the street from our hotel and even saw Tom Selleck in his Ferrari. I have known Mr. Sprague through my parents most of my life and he was a great man and a great teacher. My deepest condolences go out to his family. R.I.P. Mr. Sprague
Stew was a inspirational teacher. His love of art was contagious. I had great respect for his kind and caring approach to ALL students. It was a pleasure to work with Stew at the West.

Dear Donna and family - I am deeply saddened by the news of Stew's passing. I enjoyed working with him at C.D.C.I. West. He was a kind and caring friend who always brought a smile to my face. My sincere condolences. Joanne
Our condolences to Donna and family. Stew was an excellent carver. I will miss his artistic perspective and guidance for carving realistic view points. His stories of the east coast were wonderful to listen to. He showed us pictures of his pieces of art and the Christmas Cards he printed from blocks he carved as a mirror image. He made me laugh with his tidbits of life that frustrated him. We will have a coffee and muffin and remember him when we meet again as the Northumberland Carvers.
Dear Donna, Kirk, Erica and families - we are so saddened by this news. We immediately started talking about the good old days, when we gathered on a regular basis and laughed ourselves silly. We only need to pause and listen to hear Stew’s laughter. We hope that your wonderful and happy memories will bring you comfort in the days to follow. We send our love to everyone now, until we can express it personally.
My sincere condolences to you all. Many fond memories of the entire Sprague family in the old neighborhood.
Dear Donna and family, We were so sorry to hear of Stews passing. We have many fond memories of teaching with him at the West. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Cheryl and John Barlow
Donna, Kirk, Erica and family; Cathy and I were very sorry to see that Stew had passed away. Along with Dennis Clarke, Stew and I were neighbours in our third floor corner of The West for many years and enjoyed our many interactions. Stew was an excellent teacher and a good friend to students and staff alike. He will be greatly missed. Please accept our condolences.
My condolences to Mr. Sprague’s family. Mr. Sprague was a teacher that was loved and respected by the students at CDCI West. He was a really nice person.
Besides remembering his art work, I would always remember his smile because he smiled with his whole face. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Sprauge's passing. I will forever remember him fondly. I had him for grade 11 art class. Best teacher ever!!!!
‘Mr. Sprague’ was my home room teacher in grade nine and made that big transition into high school fun, comfortable and funny. He was a high energy teacher who conveyed his caring along with his sense of humour in all he did. My condolences to his family.
Donna, Kirk, Erica and family...so sorry for your loss..hold your memories close to your heart.
I am saddened to learn of Mr. Sprague's passing. He taught me in Grade 9. Although visual arts was not my area of focus at the time and we only knew each other a short while, I always remember him fondly. I doubt he would have remembered me at all but I appreciated his warm manner, humour and obvious passion for teaching and art. He taught me many fundamental skills, like the importance of drawing, that I would eventually rely on when the winding path of education led me to major, and graduate, with a BFA in Art History at Concordia University as well as in my hobby as a really lousy recreational painter. I am not a teacher, but hold in highest regard those who have the foresight and maturity to emphasize key skills to beginners in their fields with no guarantee of any future payoff. It must be like putting a message in a bottle year after year with no response. Grade 9 was the worst year of my life. In fact, I may not have survived it without the kindness of the very few teachers like Mr. Sprague who provided a safe, caring and enjoyable atmosphere where I could rest from multiple challenges outside the art room. I was no superstar but he treated me like someone who was worth his time. And that meant something to me. As a middle-aged lady now, I strive to apply that example in my frequent dealings with youth. I am so sorry for your loss and that of the community. A life well lived, indeed, but gone too soon.

Stew will be missed by all members of the Northumberland Carvers group.
Please accept my condolences for the loss of your father. My thoughts are with you and yours during this difficult time.
I have many fond memories of "Mr. Sprague". He was an excellent art teacher giving us plenty of artistic freedoms to explore and always received each assignment with great excitement. I loved seeing Stewart after I graduated because we would catch up and talk art telling me what he was into at the time and I would tell him about my commercial and fine art projects. Luckily, I will never forget his enthusiasm in his voice and still hear his kind words of encouragement. I'm so lucky to have had him influence my carreer choices as a teacher and artist. I remember him sitting for us to model in class. I believe that drawing is one of the few I saved from high school. Stewart Sprague was a beautiful blessing for me. Rest in peace dear friend and my sincere condolences to his loving family of which he was so proud.
I had Mr. Sprague as an art teacher at the West. I really liked him and remember his sense of humour and love for the subject. It was one of the only classes I made sure to attend! My condolences to his family.

Dear Donna and family: Please accept my sincere condolances with the passing of "Mr. Sprague". He will always be admired by that name to me as when I came from Montreal, educated ini a French Parisianne school, I was quickly given a spare for his French class in Grade 10. I ended up assisting him on several occasions, grading papers and translating. He was a joy as a teacher and a wonderful person. One less chair at the Christmas table Rely on your memories, if you are able I am sitting here always with you Together with my family, I love you too. Virginia Bird/2020

So sorry to hear of Stew's passing. Pat had told us about his illness a while ago. I know she was looking forward to all of us getting together next summer. I'm sure you & Stew were looking forward to it as well, particularly after this year when you weren't able to come east. It's such a shame that for loving couples life has to end with one of us passing and the other one left to grieve. On a happier note Donna, I hope that you will be able to come to Nova Scotia next summer. We would love to see you and reminisce.
