It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our precious mother, Jessie Schmidt (nee Symmers). Mom left us peacefully Saturday morning, September 26th, at the age of 90. Predeceased by her husband Eric Schmidt, infant daughter Marlene, parents Alexander McLaren Symmers and Margaret Ellen Symmers (Cruickshank), siblings half-sister Elizabeth MacLeod (Cruickshank), Marion Wilson, Alexander Jr., Finlay, John, Robert, Annie, and Richard.
She is survived by her children Walter, Marion Skuse (Geoff), Ernest, Eric and Marlene (Rory), her grandchildren Adam (Beth), Jordan, Dale (Melissa), Teaghan and Dillon and her great granddaughters Isla and Parker.
Jessie was born and grew up in St. Henri, Montreal, Quebec. She was a loving mother and wife who always maintained her “children come first”. Mom always had a streak of independence with part-time work and a circle of close friends who shared many happy moments in our home. Mom loved music and introduced our family to the beautiful voices of Vera Lynn, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. She also loved to dance and we have fond memories of her and dad tearing up the dance floor!!
Mom’s life was filled with love, laughter and friends. Her passing will leave a permanent hole in the lives of those who loved her. At the same time, we take solace in the knowledge that Mom is no longer plagued by the dementia that overtook her body and mind in the final years. In the words of Vera Lynn, “We’ll Meet Again.”
The family wish to thank Doctor Stratford, the Nurses and PSW’s of the Mowat Wing of Extendicare Port Hope for their love, support and compassion. We also wish to thank Amanda Penfold for providing mom with loving companionship and attention over the last year as well as the many PSW’s of Legion Village for the love and attention given over the 10 years of her residency there.
A Private Funeral Service will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home in Cobourg with cremation to follow. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. I can remember her driving her scooter to the beach many times for ice cream (she had no speed limit). When our shift at work was slow many of us enjoyed a pop and a treat on your moms balcony. She always spoke very highly of all you guys and was a joy to look after!!! Sincerely, Elizabeth
My deepest sympathy to all the family. I have great memories of life in st. Henri with Jessies presence. It was always positive. R I.p..

Dear Marion, Geoff and family, We were saddened to hear of Jessies's passing. On reading about her love of music it brought back memories of a tour we took from Cobourg to Wheeling, West Virginia, and that's when we met your Mom. What great fun! We enjoyed her company on that same tour and also meeting her many times after at our restaurant and around town. We know you will miss her dearly, but you have wonderful memories as well to remember her in your daily life.

My days and nights with Jessie will forever be in my heart. She was an amazing woman who loved life and everyone around her. I truly enjoyed spending time with her while she lived at Legion Village. From soda pops and lay’s potato chips and a sweet tooth that when for day’s (like a box of icecream treats per evening) her heart was beyond gold. Thoughts are with your entire family at this time. She will be greatly missed.

Marion, Geoff and Family our sincere condolences for the loss of your Mother. I know you will miss her terribly but have comfort in knowing she is resting in peace.
I have fond memories of Jessie when I visited the Schmidt home in Westmount, QC. I was always greeted with her warm: "hello dear..." In her high pitch voice, always concerned as to whether I had eaten enough or was dressed appropriately for the weather. Something about the way she adressed me was never trivial or dismisive. She cared. My heartfelt condolences to the family and close friends who had the pleasure to be part of her life
Marion and family - my heart is broken for you - May your happy memories wrap around you all and comfort you alwAys. Love suzanne

I’m very sorry to hear of Jessie’s passing. She was someone with a warm heart, a strong character and a great sense of humour. I remember well how she welcomed me and my daughter into her home back in the 90’s when we were in Montreal for a hockey game and a visit with Geoff and Marion. I saw her again in Coburg when she had gone into a care facility. Again, her smile and joie de vie just brightened the day. Condolences to all of Mrs. Schmidt’s loved ones.
