We were saddened to hear of Gils passing. We knew of health issues but not to this extent. Gils Mom was our neighbour when we bought our first home on Church St W in the early '90s and we bought our second home from the Clareys. I used to sell and deliver finish products to Gil in his heyday as a cabinet maker. Always a smile and welcoming spirit. He will be missed.

Our Cramahe Twp. community is mourning the loss of a true champion: Gil Clarey. Many have known him all their lives. Me? A mere 21 years. But here’s what I LOVED about the man. He could tell you (me) that you (me) were (was) an idiot and then calmly, with such self-deprecating humour, tell you (me) how. He made you feel that he’d already it experienced the embarrassment or humiliation of being - an idiot. He did not pander, did not couch it in “sexist/old boys” stuff: you were an idiot regardless of gender and, now, here’s a way forward. He knew SO much about SO many things - most importantly, the power of support and kindness. I am not what would be considered a “close friend” because, I suspect, if you are classified as such, you live/lived with the security of an all-embracing bear hug. I treasure his guidance and sagacity, his sense of humour and utter honesty. But, most of all, he was SUCH a champion of us, of Cramahe Township. He had NO DOUBTS about this community’s people being capable of taking on any challenge with inclusion and the collective strength of “good people”. Much love - and thanks - to the family for sharing Gil with all of us and beyond. A great man has left us. His example remains.
