Wallace Rodney Straker

April 11, 1932 - December 28, 2018

Rod passed away peacefully after an ongoing decline in health.  He was surrounded by his loving family during his 3 month stay in hospital.  Rod was a founding partner of Hunter Straker a corporate design firm in Toronto and an avid recreational artist for much of his life. Surviving members of his extended family will miss him greatly. Special thanks to the staff at Northumberland Hills Hospital Palliative Care Unit and especially to Dr. Mark Azzopardi for their compassionate care of Rod. At his request no memorial service is planned.  The family welcomes you to share memories, thoughts and condolences directly or through this website www.MacCoubrey.com.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Mark Jay - April 11, 2019

I am so very sorry to hear of Rod's passing, more so, that I was not able to visit him during his final months. Rod left me a message on my phone in early November, while I was in New York, but never mentioned his health decline - which is not surprising, as Rod was always incredibly stoic. I will miss Rod, dearly. He was my mentor, and an incredible design agency leader, whom I worked hard to model my professional life after. Rod saw my potential, and provided me with the opportunity in 1997 to carry forward and steward Hunter Straker, the design agency he cofounded with David Hunter and Bill Templeton in 1965.To Robyn and Family, Sandra and Family, and Gails Family, I am very sorry for your loss - I know he touched each of your lives in a similar way - we are all greater for having had him in our lives.Today is Rod's Birthday, April 11th - Happy Birthday, Rod. I will miss our regular lunches in Yorkville - especially those we made it out for on your Birthday.Very Best,Mark Jay

I thoroughly enjoyed working for Rod Straker at Hunter Straker. He was a ‘class act’. Thank you.

malcolm morrison - January 4, 2019

I had the great pleasure of meeting Rod and his companion, Sandra Matthews, during a river cruise in 2013. A fascinating fellow with a great sense of humour and a font of stories from the ad industry. Many enjoyable dinners with Rod over the course of two weeks. The sort of person you hope you meet on a holiday - but unfortunately, rarely do. My condolences to his family and friends.
