It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of Karen Kelly. Karen passed peacefully after a long battle with cancer surrounded by her family. Loving daughter of Phylis and the late Harry Kelly of Cobourg, Ontario. Sister to Barry (Tenley), Michael (Christianne), Peter (Sandi). Aunt to Alex and Drew Kelly. Karen leaves many loving aunts and uncles including Marleen Bull, Mary Murray and Cathy & Albert Davidson. Karen also has many cousins including Linda Anderson, who supported Karen on her journey. Karen grew up in Cobourg, Ontario and enjoyed many activities including: figure skating, skiing, camping, Brownies, Guides, and she was a lifeguard at the Y. As an adult she took up golf. After high school she became involved with the Canada World Youth organization living with a family in Montreal, before travelling to Senegal, West Africa, where she spent a few months. Upon her return, Karen attended York University and completed her BA at Trent University. After University she went to Tadoussac, Quebec where she taught English. Karen moved to British Columbia in 1992, first to Vancouver and later Victoria, where she worked in a variety of fields and pursued a variety of interests. She led an active lifestyle hiking, camping, canoeing, sailing and biking; she biked across Canada (with her rabbit in tow – literally) and she biked south to California and down the Baja peninsula. She was an active volunteer with Greenpeace and several animal rescue organizations for dogs and rabbits. Thank you to the many loving and caring friends who were a supportive family to Karen in Victoria when she became ill. Many thanks to the caring staff of Royal Jubilee Hospital. Anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Karen is welcome to donate to any animal rescue society, humane society or charity of their choice. A private service will be held at a later date in Cobourg, Ontario. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com. Artwork by Drew Kelly.
