Catherine Martina Hogan

August 12, 1926 - September 2, 2017

Sunrise:  Aug. 12, 1926 Sunset:  Sept.02, 2017 Our mother Catherine Hogan has completed her life with grace at Extendicare Cobourg in the wee hours of the morning on September 02, 2017.  Mom was born in Rocky Point, P.E.I. on August 12, 1926.  She married our Dad, Philip, the love of her life, and shared many wonderful years together.  Sadly he passed away on April 17, 1990.  They resided in Rocky Point where we were born:  Diane (Bob Adams), Linda Sedgwick-Sharpe (Charlie Girard), Roger (Alice) and Patsy (Gordon Draper). Dad joined the Canadian Army during the Korean War.  After the war, they left their beloved Island to continue with Dad's 25 year military service. Catherine enjoyed many careers.  She managed Maple Leaf Services for many years when they lived on the base in Hagersville.  They were then transferred to Cobourg in 1964 where she accepted a position with the Ministry of Social Service.  She returned to school and received her registered Psychiatric Nurse's Certification. Another transfer brought them to Shilo, Manitoba were she was employed by the Brandon Mental Health Centre.  They eventually returned to Cobourg, and Mom worked at D'Arcy Place as a Residential Councillor until her retirement. They thoroughly enjoyed retirement, spending many winters in Florida and Arizona.  Mom was involved in many community organizations and was awarded for her dedicated services. She had a long association with the ladies auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, membership secretary for the Federal Liberal Association, as well as Regional Director for Hamilton Township. As a devoted Catholic, she was involved in many parish activities. She was a caring grandmother and was extremely proud of her seven grandchildren and their accomplishments:  Denise Adams (Peter Lorenz), Robert Adams (Kate), Shawn Sedgwick (Brenda), Kathy Sedgwick (Gord), Brent Sedgwick (Trista), James Philip Hogan (Janice), Stephen Hogan (Rhiannon); 13 great grandchildren, Nicholas (Trish) and Alexandria Lorenz, Grace, Kelly and Erin Adams, Joshua Gauthier, Madison and Curtis Lingard, Jack, Catherine and William Hogan, Aubrey and Finley Sedgwick and finally one great, great grandchild, Lukas Lorenz. She will also be fondly remembered by her P.E.I. family: the descendants of the Hogan and White families, all of whom held her in high esteem. A special thanks and recognition to the staff of Extendicare Cobourg.  What a committed and loving team of caregivers.  Mom was quite cheeky and a tad grumpy when she first moved in, but the staff just smiled and took it all in stride.  They took care to know each residents special needs and wants.  For "Miss Daisy" as they called mom, it was a heated blanket, that extra cup of tea, and taking time for a chat.  Thank you to the entire staff, you are all exceptional. She taught us to always conduct ourselves in a way that you would never have to apologize or hide from. She was strong and tenacious woman who didn't suffer fools lightly.  She was known by many names:  Nanny, G Nanny, Miss Daisy, Mama Mia and Mumsy.  She will be dearly  missed. Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, Cobourg on Monday, September 4, 2017 from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.  A Mass of  Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 1:15 p.m.  Interment St. Michael's Cemetery.  Donations to the Parkinson Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Association or the St. Michael's Restoration Fund would be appreciated.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
