Gwendolyn Sherry Holmes

January 29, 1955 - August 17, 2017

Surrounded by the love of family and friends and always in the palm of God’s hand (even now), Gwendolyn Mason Holmes died peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital on August 17, 2017. She was predeceased by her father George Mason and sister Lorrie (Art). Left to remember her with love are Thomas her husband of 34 years; their son Jonathan, partner Kathy Burley, children Declan, Fionn and Keely; their daughter Elizabeth; her mother Peg; her sisters Colleen (Tom) and Michelle (Scott) and mother-in-law Nancy Holmes. Gwen also leaves behind a close extended family in Ireland and many, many, many friends here and around the globe. Gwen was a woman of faith. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also an artist, CUPW union activist, amazing cook, and life-long learner. She got great pleasure from her grandchildren and loved sitting on her front porch. Gwen was a person of large and generous heart. Her front door was always open; her kitchen was a place of warmth and hospitality. Gwen loved sparkle: the sunlight that came through her kitchen window, moonlight dancing on the lake, the tiara she wore at her fiftieth birthday party. Her love, curiosity and commitment to living life fully right to the end made Gwen an inspiration to all who knew her. Gwen  taught us how to live with grace even when faced with the insurmountable. She  will be missed. The family wishes to thank Dr. Amin and the nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital for their devoted and tender care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 23 at 10:00 am at St. Michael’s Church in Cobourg.  If wished, donations in Gwen’s memory can be made to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Palliative Care Unit; St. Elizabeth Foundation; and the CUPW Moving On Project.
