Douglas James Deviney

June 16, 1919 - April 11, 2016

In the wee hours of Monday morning, Doug passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Palliative Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital.  He had a full and long life and would have been 97 on June 16th this year.   He was a great man; a proper gentleman, with strong work and life ethics that he passed on to his children and his grandchildren.   We will miss his quiet and powerful presence but know that he will always be with us in our hearts and spirit.  Beloved husband of 65 years of Paula (nee Ives ), loving father of Barb (Al Harnden), Joanne (Brian Connor), Jim (Deb O’Rourke), Gina (Ted Jackson), and Laurie (Jim Martin). Proud ‘Poppa’ of Erin Connor (Ben Sykes); Terry Connor (Brandy Dogan); Jacob Deviney; Jordan, Mitchell and Rachel Jackson; Hamish, Cameron and Elias Deviney-Martin. Dear brother of Ruth Haig (Milton, deceased) and the late Marion Sherwin (Gordon). He will be sadly missed by his in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Doug was born on Glendale Farm, Vernonville.  After graduating from Kemptville College, Doug spent 25 years of his life farming on the homestead employing many farm hands during the war years.  Doug retired from farming and used his experience to serve customers for 25 years at the Grafton CO-OP. Doug was a member of the Colborne No. 91 Masonic Lodge for 67 years.  He was Master of the Colborne Lodge and was Grand Steward for the Grand Lodge of Canada, Province of Ontario. Doug was a pillar of the community and Church in both Vernonville and Grafton.  Doug and Paula spent many years enjoying their retirement traveling the world, square dancing with their friends, and touring back country roads in their blue MGB convertible (GR8 FUN). Friends are invited to call at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St., E., Cobourg on Friday April 15th from 3-7 pm.  A Masonic Service will take place at 7:15 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held in St. Andrew’s United Church, Grafton on Saturday April 16th at 2 pm. with visiting from 1-2 pm.  Interment in Vernonville Cemetery. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vernonville Church Heritage Fund.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
