Maguire, William H. “Bill” CTC In his 89th year, passed away suddenly but peacefully at home with his wife Doris by his side. Bill enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Reserve) in 1943 and started his military career in the Army as a boy soldier 1944 as a driver-mechanic. He then transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and served until October of 1950, and in emergency reserve until 1957. While stationed in Belfast he met and married his wife Doris in 1947. His experience with travelling with the Navy followed by 25 years of travelling sales, led Bill to becoming a certified travel agent and open Maguire Travel from 1979-1999. In 1982 Bill joined, ACTA, now known as, The Association of Canadian Travel Agents. He sat on the National Board of Directors and was elected President of Ontario and National President. Bill has also served his community as a member of the Lions Club of Cobourg where he has been an active member for 50+ years. He held several elected positions within his local club and district and was elected by the Lions of the World, as International Director of Lions Clubs for a two year term from 1977 to 1979. He was invited, and served, as the only public sector advisor to the passport division of External Affairs and International Trade, Canada, from 1992-1999. Bill was an appointed member of the Board of Directors of the Funeral Services Board of Ontario for six years 1997-2003. Bill was an active 19 year volunteer and life member of the Cobourg Cougars Jr. “A” Hockey Club. Bill was a recipient of the Queen’s Golden as well as the Diamond Jubilee Medal for his voluntary contributions to his community and, to Canada in general. Bill and his wife Doris have lived in the Cobourg area for over 58 years and celebrated their 68th anniversary in 2015. He is survived by his loving wife Doris, his children, Ron (Brenda), Lynne Sherwin (Bruce), John (Jean), Martin (Donna), Lorraine Harnden (Rob), 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Bill is predeceased by his daughters Bonita and Cheryl and son-in-law Brian Turk. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 from 3-5 p.m. at MacCoubrey Funeral Home (30 King St. E., Cobourg). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 1 p.m. in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the NHH – Lion’s Chemo Clinic would be appreciated by the family.
