Born in New Annan, N.S., January 6, 1922 passed away peacefully in her 95th year on March 15, 2016 in Tatamagouche, N.S. Hazel grew up in New Annan, one of eleven children in the family of the late Edward and Irene (Wilson) Carruthers. She felt fortunate to have been raised in a loving, Christian family and tried to do something to help each of them. Hazel studied to become a teacher, and began her career in one-room school houses. Just prior to her retirement in 1978, Hazel was recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal for her work in the classroom and community. She was active with the Red Cross Society, New Annan Community Club, as well as her church community. Hazel is survived by her husband Brenton Beebe of New Annan, N.S. and his children Joy Millson (Ross), Roger (Deb), Ward (Penny) all of Ontario. She was loving grandmother to 8 grandchildren; Chris Millson, Stephanie Gasko (Paul), Lisa Cardwell (Rob), Natasha Boden (Derek), Kyle Beebe, Brittany Beebe, Jessica Beebe and Chad Beebe - and 8 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother Laurie Carruthers (Joyce), and sisters Phyllis Carruthers, Hilda Wilson (Graeme), Helen Hansen (Richard), and sisters-in-law, Etta Carruthers and Dorothy Beebe. Hazel will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Leslie Carruthers, Ray Carruthers and Ralph Carruthers, sisters, Muriel Blanchard, Sadie Hansen and Bernice Beebe. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2016 in Coulter’s Funeral Home, 48 Riverside Drive, Tatamagouche. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Bell Gift Cemetery, West New Annan. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche, N.S. would be appreciated by the family.
