John David Upton

June 19, 1947 - February 1, 2016

UPTON, John David – Peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, February 1st, 2016.  David, in his 69th year, after a courageous battle with cancer for over 10 years.   Beloved husband of Sandra (nee Offenburger); Sandra's best friend and the love of her life for more than 50 years. Loving father of Gregory (Alexandra), Matthew (Nathalie), and Brandon (Emily).  Cherished grandfather of Michael, Daniel, Elizabeth, Jérémie, Griffin, Gabriel, Ryland, Brooklynn and Violet.  Dear brother of Gail (the late Tony) Colangelo and Christopher.  He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.  After moving to Cobourg in 1974, Dave & Sandra fell in love with the community.  Dave immediately became involved, joining Kinsmen.  He rose through the ranks of the club, up to President.  He then ran for and became Deputy Governor of Zone C (south Central Ontario).  Dave then served on two different Governor committees for District 8; essentially Ontario wide.  Dave was selected to Life Membership in Kin in 1986.  During this same time, Dave sat on the Cobourg District Business Improvement committee, becoming Chair, and holding that position for 6 years.  In 1988, Dave became involved in the “Cobourg & District United Way”, running the fundraising campaign successfully.  The following year, Dave chaired the Board of the United Way; the year that they changed their name to the Northumberland United Way.  About this time, Dave decided to get involved in the CCHL, as Dave & Sandra had 3 boys involved in hockey.  Dave sat on several committees, helping run the Midget-Juvenile league, eventually becoming Chair of the CCHL in 1994.  After these community activities, Dave increased his participation at their Church, Trinity United in Cobourg, becoming involved with several committees of Council.  Stewardship was always a favourite for Dave and for several years he chaired that committee.  Dave then stayed involved with the Church Council, eventually becoming Chair of Council for two years.  Most recently he co-chaired the Finance Division.  Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home (30 King St. E., Cobourg) on Friday, February 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 6 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church, Cobourg.  Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society – Volunteer Drivers or to Trinity United Church would be appreciated.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
