George Totten died peacefully in Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg on Monday, September 22, 2014 in his 89th year. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 63 years, Doreen Totten (nee Allen). Dear father of Catherine (Bill) Bryck of Toronto, Bob (Manuela) of Cobourg and Jim of Calgary. Loving grandfather of Michael (Ashley), Kelly , Victoria, Christopher and Alexandra . Also lovingly remembered by Tara (Patrick). Survived by sisters Mary Broad and Rose (Bill) Golly and his brother, Harvey. Pre-deceased by his sister Maxine (Jim) Kaiser. Born and raised in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, George served in the Canadian army and then commenced studies at the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in 1949. He moved east to Ontario where he met the love of his life, Doreen in Brampton and they were married in Orangeville July 28, 1951. In 1953, they moved to Cobourg where George served as county engineer for United Counties of Northumberland and Durham from 1953 until 1962. In 1962, he left the Counties to establish George L. Totten, Consulting Engineer which later grew to become the very successful engineering firm of Totten, Sims and Hubicki. George was proud to be a Rotarian, a Past President of the Cobourg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. George spent many hours as a Cobourg volunteer including coaching hockey and softball teams. His softball team won a Provincial championship for Cobourg. The Totten family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood Estates and Cobourg Landmark/Extendicare for their loving care and kindness. Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E., Cobourg on Thursday, September 25th from 12 - 2 p.m. with a funeral service at 2 pm in the chapel. Donations to the Parkinson Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Rotary Club of Cobourg (cheques payable to Robert S. Scott Charitable Trust) would be appreciated by the family.
