After a brief sojourn, a valiant battle, and many questions on life, death and ignorance, Rod passed away on Wednesday, March 26, in Cobourg, Ontario. Rod leaves behind his wife Merike Lugus, her daughters Valerie (Walker) and Paula (Richard), his daughter Sheila (Xavier Massé) and son Stephen (Maggie), their mother Joan (née Lander), sister Mia (Tom Settle), five wonderful grandsons: Pierre, Antoine, Taylor, Mackenzie and Samuel, step-granddaughter Violet, dogs Laijka and Daisy, and cats Kiisu Miisu, Cleo, and Clou Clou. Rod grew up in Lawrence Park, Toronto, finished as head boy at Trinity College School in Port Hope, graduated in Chemistry at U of T, and became a Managing Partner at Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst and Young). His writing ranged from auditing textbooks to poetry, his love of music spanned all genres and his compositions ranged from ragtime to contemporary. President of the Canadian Opera Company in 1969 and 1977, Rod wrote the libretto for Mario and the Magician, performed by the COC in 1992. Physics was another passion, and he was inspired by current work in Noetic Science. Thanks to the Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. Cross, Dr. Moorsom and the excellent palliative care team at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. This summer, family and friends will celebrate Rod’s life with the music, poetry and people he loved. In gratitude for the many transfusions he received, please give blood.
