Loretta Ubell

October 15, 1936 - September 22, 2012

LORETTA THERESA UBELL (NEE LAUZON) died gracefully surrounded by love on September 22, 2012 at Northumberland Hills Hospital at the age of 75. Loretta is survived by her devoted children Andrea, Bonita (Adrian Oosterman) and Carl.  Grandson Thomas has a wealth of fond memories of his Mim.  Loretta is also survived by her siblings Ray Lauzon (Wilma) and Shirley Hoffman (John), sisters-in-law Rhoda, Betty and Elizabeth, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ralph and MaryLu Costyn, many nieces & nephews, “family of the heart”, good friends and neighbours.  Predeceased by her parents Calixte and Stella Lauzon, siblings Jeannette (Clarence Evans), Roy, Austin and Lloyd and her husband of 55 years Donald.    A firm believer in the power of education Loretta was a graduate of Corpus Christi High School, Ontario Teacher’s College, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and the University of Toronto.  Loretta taught primary school for several years in Windsor and had a successful career with Sears Canada in Toronto where she worked in Customer Service, Personnel, Training, Selection & Placement and Employee Relations.    She was proud of her accomplishments promoting women in business and served as President of the Toronto Women’s Network. Loretta’s most enduring role has been that of mentor.  She inspired people through her volunteer work:  Catholic Women’s League, RCIA instructor, Sunday school teacher & Lector (Thorncliffe Park Catholic Church, St. Paul’s Basilica, St. Alphonsus, and St. Michael’s); tutoring as a “reading buddy” (Wooler), United Way; and the Panel of American Women (Windsor & Detroit). She loved life, was an avid gardener, relished her time in Paris & London and loved the arts.  One of her last laments:  “So many movies I have not seen, so many books I have not read”.   Forever the teacher right to her last breath there were lessons to learn in a life lived well.    Loretta had a team of angels that enabled her to live independently over the past 11 months since her husband’s death.  Thank you to CCAC’s palliative care team, the VON nurses and most importantly her special PSWs from St. Elizabeth.  The palliative care team at Northumberland Hills who provided her with a dignified passage over the past two weeks, your support and assistance was much appreciated.  Words are not enough to thank Stephanie for her support to Loretta’s children during these last weeks of her life.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church (University Ave. and Division St. Cobourg) on Tuesday September 25, 2012 at 10:30 am.  Interment at Heavenly Rest Cemetery, Windsor.  In lieu of flowers please forward donations for  Northumberland Hill Hospital (Palliative Care Team) through MacCoubrey’s Funeral Home Cobourg (905-372-5132).  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com
