Mary Elizabeth Jackson

Suddenly at Peterborough Regional Hospital on Tuesday May 22nd, 2012, Mary Jackson  (nee Cowell) at 81 years of age.  Loving wife of the late Arthur Jackson.  Dear mother of Ian Brown and step-mother of Brenda Jackson (Jean-Marcel Duciaume) and Karen Matt (Ernie).  Cherished grandmother of Travis, Darcie, Adam, Nicola, Russell, Matthew, Sarah, Chad, Jason, Danielle and Darcy.  Great grandmother of Keven, Alex, Ella, Emelia, Quinn, Willa, Sylvie, Paige, Faith, Manon and great, great grandmother of Rayne.  Mary will be missed by her brother James “Jim” Cowell of England and her many nieces, nephews and close friends.  Visitation will take place at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 11 King St. W. Colborne, on Saturday June 2nd, 2012 from 2 – 2:30pm followed by a Celebration of Mary’s life at 2:30.  In honouring Mary’s wishes the family has asked that donations be made to the Cramahe Horticultural Society, Northumberland Veterinary Services or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.   Mary was born in Ashford, Kent, England Nov. 23, 1930 and grew up at Bridge Farm in Bethersden where she attended school and apparently was an avid cricket player. Although Mary spent the majority of her life in Canada, and became a Canadian citizen, Kent was always in her heart, as she kept contact with family and friends through frequent correspondence and several visits over the years. Mary emigrated to Canada on Sept. 29, 1949, shipping out of Liverpool for Montreal. Over the years Mary got to see a great deal of her new homeland in travels across the country and through living in various parts of Ontario: Brampton, Brockville, Erin, Ottawa, Scarborough, Castleton, and finally Colborne. Along the way she trained and worked as a bookkeeper, married Jim Brown, raised their son Ian, and participated in a variety of sports and activities.

Mary met and married Art Jackson in the ‘70’s. Together they traveled extensively during vacations and after retirement.  They also visited and received visits from their new and vastly extended, family, Mary having inherited two new daughters, Karen and Brenda, and eventually a whole gang of grandchildren as well as their offspring. Mary continued her hobbies of stamp collecting and gardening. Shewas quite the sportswoman: golf, curling, darts, bowling, snowshoeing, Xcountry skiing, cycling and most recently Tai Chi.Mary was happily involved in the Horticultural and Stamp clubs where she volunteered many hours and freely offered her bookkeeping skills. She and Art also greatly enjoyed the Legion dinners and many social activities. Mary even recently joined Probus as she worked her way through her grief after her loss of Art in January and started to make a new life for herself. Mary showed great love and courage in caring for Art and she was greatly comforted and strengthened by the support she received from the community.
