Alexander (Sandy) McKay It is with profound sadness that we mark the sudden death of a very dear husband, father and grandfather. Alexander (Sandy) McKay died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Sandy was born in Edinburgh, Scotland where he trained as a mining engineer at Lady Vic Colliery in Gore Bridge and at Harriett Watt University, Scotland. His early career was divided between ICI, British Rubber, Scottish Brewers and McKinley MacPherson Distillery. In 1967 Sandy immigrated to Canada with his wife, Mhora, and his daughters Karen, Wendy and Sally. For more then a quarter of a century, Sandy was a dedicated employee of General Foods Ltd., Cobourg, where he worked as Manufacturing Services Manager. After retiring, Sandy began a new career in real estate. He was the office manager of Frank Real Estate in Cobourg and later worked for Century 21 in Cobourg and Port Hope. Sandy was an active member of the Northumberland Real Estate Board. For many years Sandy dedicated himself to the Cobourg Kinsmen Club. He was Club President, Deputy Governor of Zone C and was declared a Life Member in 1978. His commitment to a strong community led him to become a member of the original committee that formed the Cobourg YMCA. In addition to his family, Sandy had many loves. He was the youngest player on the Edinburgh Men’s Cricket team and one of the organizers of the GF “Cricket Extraordinaires” in the 1980s. Sandy was often heard to say, “Golf is both a love and a curse.” He played courses from St. Andrews to Larchmere and enjoyed themall. Many hours were spent tending his garden, reading mysteries and shouting at the television during his beloved Manchester United matches. His most enjoyable pastime was watching his three grandsons, Michael, Andrew and Willie, playing hockey, golf, soccer, rugby, track and field and football. He also enjoyed “the boys'” antics on school stages during plays and concerts. Sandy was a talented man and something of a Robert Burns scholar. His rendition of “Address to a Haggis” will never be equalled. If you are lucky, one of Sandy’s signature caricatures graces your wall. Sandy loved to travel. He toured Europe extensively, and one of his most memorable experiences was visiting the USSR before its fall. But no matter where he roamed, his heart was always in Midlothian. Family was the most important aspect of Sandy’s life. Sandy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mhora, his daughters Karen, Wendy and Sally, his three sons-in-law, Chris, Erich and Bruce, and his three grandsons, Michael, Andrew and William. In accordance with Sandy’s wishes, he will be interred in a private family ceremony. Donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to The Hospital for Sick Children or Mount Sinai ICU in Toronto.
