Joseph Patrick O’Grady, passed away after an all too brief life following a difficult medical battle endured with his hallmarks of courage, dignity, strength, laughter and cheer. Known not only for his pockets of lollypops and suckers for customers at O’Grady’s Butcher Shoppe and then Foodland, but also for his broad smile and endless cheer, Joe succumbed to the difficulties and complications of lung disease and cancer in his 69thyear. Loving husband of forty-seven years of Gloria (nee Kelly), proud father of daughter, Deanne Spalding, and her children, Georgie, Sam and Jenny Spalding; his son, Sean and wife Lisa (nee Wakeman), and their children Cameron and Tristan O’Grady; his daughter, Shannon and her children, Stephanie Lewis, Raylee Lewis and Shawni O’Grady Cooke; his son Ryan and spouse Megan Roche; and foster son Douglas Smith. In addition to his immediate family, Joe was blessed with a supportive and loving extended family. While predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Irene (nee Somers), as well as his sister Ellen (Prior), he is survived by his brothers Tom and wife Betty; John and his wife Marg and their families as well as brother-in-law, Frank and wife Julie Prior and family. He was dearly loved by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Kelly, and her late husband Gordon (Bus) Kelly and their large extended family. Joe left this world having taken the time to say goodbye to those that he loved and who loved him, in the comfort and compassionate environment of Northumberland Hills Hospital, with the assistance of the exemplary physicians, nurses and auxiliary of Palliative Care at Northumberland Hills Hospital, and thoroughly supported during his difficulty by the teams in the ICU, Acute Care, Rehabilitation Unit, and the unending support of the Respiratory Therapy Team. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Church on Wednesday, June 22ndat 10 am. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 21stfrom 2-4 and 7-9 pm with Parish Prayers at 8:45 pm. at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E., Cobourg. In lieu of flowers, individuals wishing to express their condolences may choose to make donations to the Ontario Lung Association, Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
