READ, Major Angus Vaughan O.St.J., C.D. was born April 21, 1928 in Virden Manitoba to Frank and Rosie Read. He passed away unexpectedly on October 21, 2010 at Northumberland Hills Hospital. He joins his beloved wife Bernice who left us September 7th 2010. They were inseparable in life and now re-united in death. He will be forever loved and remembered his children Marilyn - deceased (Rob), Loreen (Jim), and Brian (Kym), and his grandchildren Nicole, Tim, Graham, Kate and Cassidy. Also lovingly remembered by his sister Phyllis Matthews and her family Joanne, Carole-Anne (Peter, Katherine & Stephanie), Eddie and Marianne, and his cousins Irene Beauchamp, Lorraine Thompson, Rowena Hayball, Bill Dutton (Donna) and Raymond McMillan. At 14 years of age, Angus joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1942 as a boy soldier in the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. He continued a distinguished career in the military for 41 years. He was an infantry officer in the PPCLI and a paratrooper in both the PPCLI and later in the Canadian Ordinance Corps. He proudly served his country in the Korean War. He was posted in many Canadian bases, as well as in the US, Japan, Germany and the United Nations Cyprus Peacekeeping. He retired with the rank of Major in 1983, and moved back to Cobourg. Angus began his second career in 1985 when he was elected Mayor of the Town of Cobourg. He took on the job as a full time Mayor, tirelessly working to promote the town, it's tourism and various industries. Angus was committed to Cobourg and served on many committees and associations including the Diamond Triangle Economic Commission, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Cobourg Utilities Commissions, and Ontario Municipal Waterworks Association. He was very involved with St. Peter's Church and offered his services on the Church council, as the People's Warden and the Mzuzu Aids and Orphans committee. As a tireless volunteer, Angus was involved with Sir Sandford Fleming College, Korean Veterans Association, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133, Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club of Cobourg, Royal Military Institute and St John's Ambulance. He was awarded the Officer of the Order of St. John in 1984, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Honour Roll, a Paul Harris Fellow, Ontario Bi Centennial Medal, the Canadian Centennial Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration with 2 bars. A special thanks to the staff at the Emergency Department of the Northumberland Hills Hospital who gave Angus the best care possible. They offered compassion and respect to Angus and his family in their time of need. Visitations will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. East, Cobourg K9A 1K7 on Wednesday October 27th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Peter's Church on Thursday October 28th at 2:00 pm.
