Ian Peter George Matthews - 1920 - 2008 - It is with great sadness that we announce Ian's unexpected passing. He slipped away peacefully at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg on Tuesday April 29, 2008. Ian leaves his beloved wife Elizabeth (Betty) having together shared more than sixty-three years of marriage. Left to mourn are his daughters Ann and Elaine (Paul), grandchildren Christopher, Leslie (Colin), Ian and much loved great-granddaughter Veda. Also grieving his loss are his brother Alec, nephew Jim (Sherry) and their children, niece Nancy and her sons, as well as many wonderful friends. Ian was born February 23, 1920 and raised in Toronto. He traveled to Scotland working for the War Munitions during WWII as a mechanic. There he met and married Betty. After the war they returned to Canada where Ian started work with TTC and Grey Coach Lines in Toronto. Several years later joined Travelways Bus Line as fleet superintendent until his retirement. However, retirement was short-lived as he was asked to be an Instructor at Seneca College for several more years. Ian had a great curiosity about the world around him. He was never idle and enjoyed a variety of interests including astronomy, opera and of course fishing. Throughout their lives together Ian and Betty enjoyed years at the cottage near Huntsville, traveled extensively and shared special times with family and friends. He was respected for his commitment and capabilities in support of various community endeavours. As husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Ian will be remembered as the epitome of a gentle, kind and intelligent man. He had a quiet, easy-going, thoughtful and caring manner. Ian loved and supported his family unconditionally. He will truly be missed. At Ian's request, there will be no service. A private family committal will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Ian's honour may contribute to Northumberland Hills Hospital, Palliative Care Unit.
